01Compare usable space with your actual belongings
List the items the bag must hold, such as a laptop in its sleeve, a water bottle or a document folder. Measure the largest item and ask for the usable compartment and opening dimensions. An outside width alone cannot confirm that the item will pass through a narrow opening.
Check whether dividers, padding or internal pockets reduce the usable space. For a tote, compare the handle opening and closure; for a shoulder bag, ask about strap drop and adjustment. Keep these dimensions with the exact size option rather than a generic model name.
02For backpacks, distinguish capacity from carrying fit
Osprey’s sizing guide bases pack fit on torso length and explains how the hipbelt and shoulder harness affect load carrying. This is a method reference for equipped backpacks, not a universal sizing chart for every bag here.
For your selected backpack, check the actual strap adjustment range and whether it has a usable hipbelt or padded back. For a small everyday backpack, also compare access to the compartment you use most. A capacity label by itself cannot establish how it will sit on your body.

03Inspect the opening, lining and included straps
Ask for inside and outside views, the base, closure and strap attachment points. Record detachable straps or accessories separately so you can compare the package with your order. If a laptop pocket is essential, ask for that pocket’s measurements rather than the bag’s total height.
Confirm the material information when care or durability affects your choice. Pictures cannot prove leather grade or waterproofing. For a structured bag, tell the agent whether preserving its shape is a packing priority and compare shipping using that actual packing arrangement.
